| The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed that May 15 of every year shall be observed as the International Day of Families.
The theme for 2009 is “Mothers and Families: Challenges in changing times”. Last year the UN chose to focus on men and this year the focus is not just on women, but particularly mothers. As with the theme of last year, this year’s theme has particular relevance for us in the Caribbean and much can derived from it.
We invite you to join with us as we go beyond our normal limits to spend time together and pay particular attention to family life which can so easily be compromised within the challenges of our contemporary time. Use the time to celebrate in your triumphs as a family, learn from your challenges and reflect on the theme with the aim of enhancing family life.
Though we put special emphasis on this day, we should continue to pay attention to the quality of family life continuously. Also note that the 2009 theme is valid from May 15 2009 to May 14 2010.
For organizations, institutions, groups and families who want to plan activities around this theme; if help is needed in deciding activities for the theme, our Human and Social Development Unit : Youth, Family Life and Gender Affairs support will be happy to offer suggestions and may be able to help in planning some activities.
Also, we are reminding you to do your best to ensure that in your attempt to affirm families and family members that no individual or group is negatively impacted upon.
